The plug-in responsible for rendering on Godot using the DirectX12 graphics API was created by an independent developer from Spain. The project code is available in the programmer's GitHub repository, and anyone can use it. But the company went further and submitted a pull request for the plugin in the next version of Godot 4.0.

Godot's implementation of DirectX12 support is compatible with the following platforms:

  • Microsoft Windows;
  • Universal Windows Platform (UWP);
  • Windows on ARM
  • Microsoft Game Development Kit (GDK)
  • Xbox.

It is noted that before Godot worked on the Windows operating system using Vulkan and OpenGL. Representatives of W4 Games said in a company blog that support for a proprietary graphics API will provide new opportunities for game developers. The company hopes that DirectX12 support will be included in the official version of Godot 4.0.

At the end of July 2022, Godot representatives announced that from August 3 of the same year they were freezing the development of new functions for the graphics engine of the same name. The company has begun the process of preparing a new version for release. Godot 4.0 is expected to be released in early September 2022.
