While Samsung began shipping 3nm chips on July 25, 2022, its nearest competitor TSMC completed the main phase of construction of the Fab 21 plant for production for 5nm chips near Phoenix, Arizona (USA) on July 30, 2022. The facility was built quite quickly: work began in March 2021 and ended in July 2022.

Chips based on 5nm technology will be produced at this factory. However, the main phase of construction was completed, there is still a lot left: anti-vibration systems must be installed at the factory, electricity, sewerage and air conditioning must be installed. And only after that the installation of production equipment will begin.
The Fab 21 plant should produce the first chips only at the beginning of 2024. At the first stage, the productivity of the enterprise should be 20,000 wafers per month on 5-nm equipment.
Since the total area of the factory is 445.15 hectares, TSMC will most likely open other stages of production there, and productivity can increase to 100,000 plates per month (it all depends on demand).
According to various estimates, at the moment the amount spent on the enterprise ranges from $10 billion to $12 billion.
