TikTok has the ability to generate backgrounds using artificial intelligence

The TikTok social networking app now has the ability to generate images for backgrounds from a text description. It is noted that the quality of the received images is low and the neural network can only cope with simple descriptions.

Journalists from The Verge managed to test the function and noted that the neural network cannot generate photorealistic images, but makes them look like drawings. It has also been observed that the neural network avoids some topics and makes images generated from such descriptions abstract.

Experts believe that the developers intentionally cut down the possibilities of the effect. Firstly, the TikTok application has a large audience, and frequent use of the effect would impose additional computational costs. Secondly, with the help of photorealistic generation, it would be possible to create images that violate the rules of the site.

For example, journalists asked the neural network to generate images according to the description “nude model on the beach.” The resulting images used the colors of human skin and similar forms of the human body, but without details.

Experts note that such a move by the social network suggests that the technology for generating images from a text description is becoming more popular and penetrating into everyday mobile applications. So far, experts do not have a forecast for the further development of such solutions, but they note that similar functions are likely to appear in other social networks.
