Sleep monitoring on the Apple Watch really works! Here’s how

If the Apple Watch is one of the best-selling watches in the world, it is (also) because of all the features it has developed. Particularly on the new models, such as the Apple Watch Ultra.

Sleep monitoring on the Apple Watch really works! Here's how

Sleep monitoring on the Apple Watch is one of the new workhorses of Apple's smartwatch. According to data from the Cupertino company, the smartwatch has managed to establish itself in the watch market by becoming the world's best-selling watch. How did it do it? With the right mix of design and innovation: the available functionalities and the myriad of accessories and straps that can be purchased separately have packaged a mature and complete product. An all-round success that prompted Apple to move the bar even higher with the Apple Watch Series 8 and Ultra, which also allows you to track your body temperature. But it was the inclusion of sleep tracking that completed an already sufficiently advanced smartwatch: after years of having to exploit third-party apps to have a minimum of control over your waking state or how long you sleep at night, Apple was able to move everything within the Sleep app on Apple's latest two smartwatches by natively exploiting the sensors inside the smartwatch. So, along with keeping track of your physical activity, monitoring smartphone notifications, taking an electrocardiogram on your wrist, listening to music and more, you can also monitor your sleep level.

How sleep monitoring works with Apple Watch

The watch's accelerometer detects micro-movements due to breathing in sleep, allowing Apple Watch to intelligently understand how long you sleep each night in REM, deep, or main sleep stages. The first time, you need to set the time you want to go to bed and the alarm for the morning so that the watch understands in advance when to wake up - just as if it were in power-saving mode - by activating the full immersion sleep function that limits distractions and facilitates relaxation. The first day of waking up can be abrupt because, if you don't hear the sound of your iPhone, you feel a sort of haptic tick on your wrist sent by the Watch that helps you wake up - but you can decide to turn it off or put it off.

On the wake-up screen you can read what time it is, how long you have slept and the remaining battery level, while you can open the Sleep app to check how many times you have woken up, how long your waking and sleeping periods have lasted and a graph showing the resting trend for the last 14 days. Here you can set your goals, when you want to wake up on weekdays or holidays, or change the time at which Do Not Disturb mode is activated: in short, the minimum package of settings for proper sleep monitoring on the Apple Watch. The only limitation is in terms of battery life: the feature requires a minimum of 30 per cent recharge to ensure proper operation during the night, otherwise the watch will ask you to recharge it before going to bed.

How long does the battery life of an Apple Watch last

How much does this value affect the overall battery life of the smartwatch? Less than you might expect: with an Apple Watch Series 8, you can go to bed with 50 per cent remaining and wake up after eight hours - and sleep monitoring activated - with a battery life of around 42 per cent. Apple's efforts on this front over the past few years are paying off with an average battery life level sufficient to cover two days with all sensors active and fitness monitoring in place.
