Python — Filter floating point strings from a list of strings

| | |

Method # 1: Using Loop + Exception Handling
A combination of the above functions can be used to accomplish this task. In this we iterate over each element and try to convert each string to a floating point value, if successful means it is floating point, otherwise it raises a ValueError and we can get the desired string.

# Python3 code to demonstrate how it works
# Filter floating point strings from the String list
# using loop + exception handling

# initialize list

test_list = [ ’gfg’ , ’ 45.45’ , ’ is’ , ’ 87.5’ , ’best’ , ’90.34’ ]

# print original list

print ( "The original list:" + str (test_list))

# Filter floating point strings from list String
# using loop + exception handling

res = []

for ele in test_list:

  try :

  float (ele)

  except ValueError:

res.append (ele)

# result print

print ( "String list after filtering floats: " + str (res))

Output:

 The original list: [’gfg ’,’ 45.45’, ’is’,’ 87.5’, ’best’,’ 90.34’] String list after filtering floats: [’gfg’,’ is’, ’best’]

Method # 2: Using Regular Expressions + list comprehension
A combination of the above functions can accomplish this task. In this we perform the filtering task using the generated regular expression, and the list comprehension is used to iterate over the list and apply the filter.

# Python3 code to demonstrate how it works
# Filter floating point strings from the String list
# using regex + list comprehension

import re

# initialize the list

test_list = [ ’gfg’ , ’ 45.45’ , ’is’ , ’87.5’ , ’ best’ , ’90.34’ ]

# print original list

print ( "The original list:" + str (test_list))

# Filter lines floating point from a String list
# using regex + list comprehension

temp = re. compile (r ’d + (?:. d *)’ )

res = [ele for ele in test_list if not temp.match (ele)]

# print result

print ( "String list after filtering floats:" + str (res))

Exit:

 The original list: [’gfg’,’ 45.45’, ’is’,’ 87.5’, ’best’,’ 90.34’] String list after filtering floats: [’gfg’ , ’is’,’ best’]
