PHP Substr_compare () function

Syntax:
int substr_compare ($str1, $str2, $startpos, $len, $caseInsensitive)
Parameters:This function takes a total of five parameters, of which the first three are required and the other two are optional. These parameters are all described below:
  • $str1(required): This parameter represents the first row to compare.
  • $str2 (required): This parameter represents the second line to compare.
  • $startpos(required): This parameter specifies where to start the comparison in $str1. If startpos is negative, it starts to compare from the end of the line.
  • $len(optional): This parameter specifies how many of $str1 to compare.
  • $caseInsensitive(optional): This parameter represents a Boolean value that indicates whether the comparison should be case sensitive. If set to FALSE, then the comparison will be case sensitive. If set to TRUE, the comparison will be case insensitive
  • Return Value:This function returns an integer value in the following cases:
    • Returns less than 0 if $str1 starting at $startpos is less than str2.
    • Returns greater than 0 if $str1 starting at $startpos is greater than string2.
    • Returns 0 if $str1 and $str2 are equal.
    • If $startpos is greater than or equal to $str1, or $len is less than 1, then substr_compare() prints a warning and returns FALSE.
    The following program illustrates the substr_compare() function in PHP:
    // PHP illustration program
    // substr_c function ompare() echo substr_compare ( "engineer" , "gfg" , 2). "" ; echo substr_compare ( "engineerforengineer" , "gfg" , 2). "" ; echo substr_compare ( "Geeks" , "gfg" , 0, 1, true). "" ; echo substr_compare ( "Geeks" , "gfg" , 0, 3, true). "" ; echo substr_compare ( "GeeksforGeeks" , "engineerforengineer" , 0, false). "" ;
    ?>
    Output:
    -2 - 2 0 -1 0
