Syntax:
ftp_nlist ($ftp_connection, $directory);
Parameters:This function takes two parameters as above and described below:
  • $ftp_connection:required parameter. It specifies a preexisting FTP connection to list all files and directory subdirectories on the FTP server.
  • $directory:Required String. It defines the directory on the remote server, i.e. the FTP server, whose file and subdirectory should be listed.
Return value:Returns an array of file and subdirectory names in on success and false on failure.Notes :
  • This function is available for PHP 4.0.0 and above.
  • The following examples cannot be run in the online IDE. So try running PHP on some hosting server or localhost with the correct ftp server name.
  • Don’t confuse with filename and subdirectory! Many websites accept a subdirectory name as a filename as well.
Below are examples to illustrate the ftp_nlist() function in PHP:
Example 1:
// Connect to the FTP server
// Using the correct FTP server $ftp_server = " localhost " ;
// Use correct ftp username $ftp_username = "username" ;
// Use correct FTP password matching
// to the ftp username $ftp_userpass = "password" ;
// File name or path for uploading to FTP server $file = "filetoupload.txt" ;
// Setting up ftp connection $ftp_connection = ftp_connect ( $ftp_server ) or die ( "Could not connect to $ftp_server" ); if ( $ftp_connection ) { echo "successfully connected to the ftp server!" ; // Login to the established connection // with ftp username password $login = ftp_login ( $ftp_connection , $ftp_username , $ftp_userpass ); if ( $login ) { // Success check login echo "
logged in successfully! "
; // Get a list of files and directories in the current directory $file_list = ftp_nlist ( $ftp_connection , " . " ); // display the array stored in $file_list using the foreach loop foreach ( $file_list as $key = > $dat ) { echo $key . "= >" . $dat . "
"
; } } else { echo "
login failed!"
; } // echo ftp_get_option ($ftp_connection, 1); // Close the connection if (ftp_close ( $ftp_connection )) { echo "
Connection closed Successfully!"
; } }
?>
Output: Content of this directory in file manager: Example 2Connect to the ftp server using port 21 and then list the contents of the directory.
// Connect to the FTP server
// Using the correct FTP server $f tp_server = "localhost" ;
// Use correct ftp username $ftp_username = "username" ;
// Use correct FTP password matching
// to the ftp username $ftp_userpass = "password" ;
// File name or path for uploading to FTP server $file = "filetoupload.txt" ;
// Setting up ftp connection $ftp_connection = ftp_connect ( $ftp_server , 21) or die ( "Could not connect to $ftp_server" ); if ( $ftp_connection ) { echo "successfully connected to the ftp server!" ; // Login to the established connection // with ftp username password $login = ftp_login ( $ftp_connection , $ftp_username , $ftp_userpass ); if ( $login ) { // Success check login echo "
logged in successfully! "
; // Get a list of files and directories in the current directory $file_list = ftp_nlist ( $ftp_connection , " . " ); // display the array stored in $file_list using the foreach loop foreach ( $file_list as $key = > $dat ) { echo $key . "= >" . $dat . "
"
; } } else { echo "
login failed!"
; } // echo ftp_get_option ($ftp_connection, 1); // Close the connection if (ftp_close ( $ftp_connection )) { echo "
