The onclick JavaScript event performs a function when a user clicks a button or other web element. This method is used both inline in an HTML document and in a JavaScript document.

When coding in JavaScript, it’s common to want to run the code when a user interacts with the web page. For example, you might want something to happen when a user presses a button. But how in JavaScript?

You implement this functionality

Here is where the "onclick ()" event can come in handy. The onclick event is one of the most commonly used event types. onclick lets you run code when a user clicks a button or other element on your web page.

In this short guide, we’ll explain how the onclick feature works. We’ll see how you can use onclick in your code to make a website interactive.

Update events

Onclick is a type of JavaScript event. Events are actions that take place in the browser and can be initiated by the user or by the browser itself. A user clicking a button, submitting a form, or pressing a key on the keyboard are all examples of events in action. In this tutorial, we’ll focus on the first one: a user clicking on an item.

Using events, developers can make a web page interactive. You can make a form visible when the user clicks a button or display a message to a user when they submit a form.

There are two main components of events: event handlers and event listeners.

When you click a button, press a key, or hover over an item, an event is executed. The event handler is the code that is executed when the event is started. For example, when you click a button, the event handler runs.

The listener event is part of an ash tree and md ; item like a button - it "listens" and waits until you interact with it. Then the listener runs the event handler.

JavaScript onclick

The JavaScript event performs a function when you click a button or other web element. For example, an onclick event can cause a dialog box to appear when you stamp a button.

Here is the syntax of the onclick method in HTML:

When you click this HTML button, the "codetorun" JavaScript function will be executed. We can use onclick with other elements, like a div. onclick is not exclusive to buttons.

You can also use onclick in Simple JavaScript. Here is an example of an onclick JavaScript method:

We use the JavaScript method getElementById to retrieve a element of our web page. When we click on the element with the id "button" our onclick function will be executed.

JavaScript example of onclick button

Suppose you want to modify a text on a web page after clicking on an element or a paragraph. We can use the onclick attribute to implement this functionality on a website. Let’s start with an HTML page with a button and some text. We will also create a JavaScript file that will contain our event code.

This is an example of a basic web page, but it is not yet interactive. When this webpage runs we will see a button and some text, but nothing will happen when we click our button. This is because we haven’t implemented the onclick script function yet.

Now that our web page is ready, we can start creating our onclick event. First we need to add the onclick () event listener to our button. This event will listen when the user clicks the button.

Let’s create our "onclick.js" file, which will contain the code for our changeParagraph () event. This event will change the text of our paragraph (the "p" element) to something else.

We have defined a JavaScript function called changeParagraph. We use the JavaScript querySelector method to select a paragraph on our page. When we first load the page, we’ll see our button and the text that says, "This text will change when you click the button."

After clicking the button, our web page changes and shows our new text:

Summary

In general, the code that allows Running an event on the web, onclick you click on the page.

This is it! Using the code above, we have successfully created a webpage that will run the code when we press a button. Although our code above only changes the text, you can make it as complicated or simple as you want.

If you want a user to be notified when they click the button, you can use the alert () function in JavaScript. If you want to add "if" declarations in your code, you can also

Thanks for explaining! I was stuck with Onclick Javascript for some hours, finally got it done 🤗. I am just not quite sure it is the best method

Simply put and clear. Thank you for sharing. Onclick Javascript and other issues with SPL PHP module was always my weak point 😁. I just hope that will not emerge anymore
