Hyundai will build a new research center at the University of Montana at Bozeman, which will focus on the creation of all-terrain vehicles. Previously, the company has already shown several concepts of walking cars.
The plant in Montana
The plant in Montana will create mobile universal transport all-terrain vehicles. They will be equipped with four electric wheels, each of which is mounted on articulated “legs”. Such robotic stilts will be able to bend or turn in almost any direction, as well as carry payloads, step over obstacles, and climb and descend difficult ledges.
Projects will be developed on an autonomous platform inspired by TIGER (“transforming intelligent ground sightseeing robot”). The car will be completely autonomous, so there are no places for passengers in its cabin. First, it is planned to release a miniature machine for the tasks of rural logistics, construction, mining and space operations. Then a two-seater version of the Elevate is planned, which can be used for disaster relief to get into places where ordinary cars will not pass and take out the victims from there.
About $20 million will be allocated for the construction of the Hyundai New Horizon plant over the next five years. Hyundai plans to build a center with an area of 1100 to 1400 square meters, which will employ about 50 people.
In December 2020, Hyundai became the owner of an 80% stake in Boston Dynamics. The company said the acquisition will allow the automaker to work on autonomous driving and artificial intelligence technologies, smart factories and robotics.
Hyundai and Boston Dynamics
Hyundai and Boston Dynamics have already announced that they have begun testing a version of the Spot robot to patrol the automaker’s factory. Hyundai also introduced the DALL-e robot for customer service.
