Attackers use WebAssembly for mining in browsers

Information security company Sucuri said that attackers use WebAssembly to run cryptominers in users' browsers. The company conducted a detailed investigation after a customer complained that his computer slowed down significantly after switching to its own WordPress-based portal.

The researchers found that the theme of the site opened malicious JavaScript code from a remote server that was run every time the site was loaded. The experts also noted that the contents of the JavaScipt file were encrypted, but after decoding, the experts immediately discovered a hidden cryptominer. The company also found that the JavaScript file ran low-level WebAssembly code that performed operations faster in the browser.

The attacker's domain was registered a year and a half ago, which indicates that attacks on users have been made for quite a long time and no one noticed it. Among other things, the JavaScript file was masquerading as a secure service, making it harder for automated monitoring systems to detect it. WebAssembly was also not chosen by chance, experts say that antiviruses do a poor job of monitoring the activity of such code.

Sucuri has advised developers and site administrators to use only up-to-date versions of themes and plugins and not to install extensions from dubious publishers.
